State the difference between a generic and brand name drug?

The difference lies only in the name and price. The products are known to contain the same ingredients. A generic drug is called by its chemical name, whereas the manufacturer assigns a brand name. Standard practice and most state laws require that a generic drug be generically equivalent to its brand-name counterpart. That is, it must contain the same active ingredients, strength and dosage form – pill, liquid or injection. The generic drug should be same chemically and have the same medical effect. The generic drug should be therapeutically equivalent.

What is the reason behind generic medicines being so cheap?

These pills are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies which are often located and based in India. These companies do not invest in research and development into new drugs; they only copy the designs of the existing drugs.
